Lisandro Martinez "surprised" by Man Utd fans' treatment towards him

Lisandro Martinez admits he is "surprised" by how quickly the Manchester United fans have taken to him.

The Argentine made a summer move from Ajax, following Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford, in a deal that could be worth over £50m. His height - or lack of - led to people questioning his suitability for the Premier League, but he has been an important part of United's turnaround in form after a difficult start.

Martinez has struck up a partnership with Raphael Varane this term and the affection he receives from the United fans has seen them create a song for the centre-half, which has made its mark on the 24-year-old.

He said: "I'm a little bit surprised, but at the same time I feel very proud. To come here to the best club in the world and the people say "Argentina, Argentina", it's amazing."

United have now won five of their last six games in all competitions after seeing off FC Sheriff in the Europa League with Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo getting on the scoresheet.

Martinez will soon jet off to join up with his compatriots as we approach the first international break of the season with several Premier League teams not in action this weekend.

Argentina have games to come against Honduras and Jamaica with the majority of the United squad heading off to differing corners of the globe before they reconvene with a Manchester derby their next assignment in early October.

Ten Hag has said on the upcoming international break: "It’s very useful. We have many meetings, we have to improve the structures in and around the club. We will also look to the window in January or next summer already to improve our way of playing by making plans.

"Of course, [you get these] periods after a game, but we have to be ready for that and many players, let’s say 90%, are away. But the others, we will train properly and for the rest we have to prepare very well. I hope that everyone stays fit and return back healthy and then we have to get into attack."

He added on the performance in Moldova: ''We got the job done, and we know it is always difficult to play here. We were really direct but I also feel like we controlled the game not from the first minute but after 10 minutes we found our foot in the game and managed to create some spaces. It was a great goal and I am really happy for Jadon [Sancho] and he finished off a really good goal, a team goal. But I also think it showed a really good team performance.''
