Lisandro Martinez sends message to Man United teammate Alejandro Garnacho after Argentina debut

Lisandro Martinez has sent a message to Alejandro Garnacho after the Manchester United winger made his senior international debut for Argentina.

The 18-year-old came on for the final 16 minutes as the World Cup winners beat Australia 2-0 in a friendly on Thursday, with Lionel Messi and German Pezzella grabbing the goals.

Garnacho had been called up to the senior squad in March but had to withdraw due to an ankle injury sustained against Southampton, which kept him out until May. He had also been selected in March 2022 but failed to feature.

So the teenager was delighted to finally get onto the pitch for his country this week. Taking to Instagram after the game, Garnacho wrote: “And if this is just a dream, never wake me up. Beautiful.”

Club and country teammate Martinez delivered a six-word message in the comments below, writing: “It looks good on you brother.” Martinez was not in the Argentina squad as he continues his recovery from a metatarsal injury.

He is expected to return in time for the start of pre-season. Like Martinez, Garnacho played a significant role for United this season.

His services were so valued by Erik ten Hag that he denied him permission to play in the Under-20 World Cup during the run-in last month. Speaking about Garnacho following his first senior outing, Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni said: “We have to go step by step.

“We gave him [Garnacho] the minutes to find his feet, we don’t have to rush. There are players of high level who did not play today but we are excited like the rest of the team.

“The idea is to give minutes to all the players so that they can start to adapt without forgetting those who are already in the team. We are excited with Garnacho and with all of the rest.”

Garnacho could make his first senior international start in Monday’s friendly with Indonesia. It would cap an extraordinary year for the youngster, who signed a new five-year deal with United in April.
