Lisandro Martinez hits back at Manchester United critics as he opens up on move from Ajax

Lisandro Martinez has hit back at those who criticised his early performances at Manchester United.

Martinez was handed his first international call-up since joining United this month and he played the full 90 minutes in the early hours of Saturday morning as Argentina beat Honduras 3-0. Lautaro Martinez and a Lionel Messi brace ensured it was a comfortable outing for the Reds defender.

It has not been all plain sailing for Martinez since he arrived from Ajax in the summer, with many pundits claiming the centre-back was too short to operate in the Premier League after a couple of tough early showings against Brighton and Brentford. However, the 24-year-old has recovered well and even won United's Player of the Month award for August.

Speaking to TyC Sports after Argentina's win over Honduras, Martinez addressed the criticism aimed at him. "To be honest, it’s a dream come true to be playing at such a big club as Manchester United, especially playing in the Premier League, which I think is one of the best leagues in the world," he said.

"It’s nice to catch the rhythm of the Premier League, so I’m very happy. I don't pay attention [to criticism].

"I believe in myself, I trust myself. I always work hard every day. That's what's going to give you results at the end." Once Martinez returns from international duty he will be preparing for a huge clash in the Premier League as United travel to Manchester City.
