Lisandro Martinez dubbed 'frighteningly bad' signing as toxic Man Utd dressing room blamed

Lisandro Martinez is a frighteningly bad signing for Manchester United and the dressing room is too toxic for the club to succeed.

That's the opinion of former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer, who thinks new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is already in danger of being shown the exit door at Old Trafford unless he starts getting through to his players and instilling his philosophy on the team.

McAteer believes fan expectation is playing a huge part in United's failings so far this season, with the club floundering rock-bottom of the Premier League following two defeats in two against Brighton and Brentford.

McAteer has suggested Ten Hag block out the noise of expectation that inevitably surrounds every Man United boss and focus on getting the basics right before worrying about winning titles.

He told LV BET: "United signing a player like Lisandro Martinez - a 5'9 centre-back - frightens me. Ten Hag is trying to find a solution, but he needs to stick to his philosophy and not fall under pressure from the fans, otherwise, he might be out the door.

"Manchester United is a toxic club at the moment. They have had numerous managers and different philosophies, which means players will come and go because they don't fit certain systems.

"The United owners have tried lying back in America, watching from a distance, and it clearly has not worked. The Glazers have certainly invested and given different managers a chance to refresh the squad with new players.

"Man United have to take a few steps back to raise their standards. United need to wipe out the expectations from the fans to win the Premier League in the next two years, it's not a realistic aim, it's too toxic in the changing room."

Manchester United have signed three players so far this summer with Ten Hag bringing in Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and his marquee summer acquisition, Martinez.

Much was made of how Martinez would fare in the physically demanding Premier League given his height, and he's had a tough start to life in England, with Ivan Toney getting the better of him in Brentford's 4-0 demolition of United.

Ten Hag hooked the centre-back at half time, although he is expected to reclaim his place in the Man United starting XI for the visit of bitter rivals Liverpool this weekend.
