Lisa Jane Hession would have been 50 today - her killer has never been found

She should be surrounded by her loving family.

A mother, maybe even a proud grandma.

Her children, and their children, doting on her.

Showering her with cards, bouquets, and a gift she will cherish.

Lisa Jane Hession was born on April 12 1970, and the milestone of her 50th birthday is today.

But she never bloomed into a woman, she never got married, she never had children, and never chased her dreams.

A talented gymnast, and keen cross-country runner who had run for Leigh Harriers, she was according to her best friend, "gorgeous".

A pupil at Bedford High in Leigh, she was popular, and academically bright.

But that promise was snuffed out when she was just 14 years old.

On the night of December 8 1984 someone ghosted behind her as she walked home from a party.

He frog marched her down an alleway and strangled her. Lisa's body was found just 100 yards from the front door of her home in Bonnywell Road, Leigh after five minutes before midnight.

She was lying in a ginnel behind Rugby Road.

The circumstances of Lisa's murder point towards the killer having local knowledge.

When he pounced he knew that at the end of Buck Street was the ginnel where he would bundle her - out of sight and earshot of neighbours.

Within a few days police had arrested a suspect. He was released without charge, and died in 2005, having been ruled out as the killer.

He was the only person ever arrested for Lisa's murder.

Martin Bottomley, head of Greater Manchester Police's Cold Case Unit said a forensic sample recovered from Lisa's body had yielded a partial DNA sample, when years later the technology had been developed.

Mr Bottomley said: "It would be good enough for a direct comparison, once we have a name.

"I think the mechanics of the incident tend to suggest the man who did this would have good local knowledge.

"We have made many appeals over the years regarding Lisa's murder, and we always get a good response.

"We have followed up numerous lines of inquiry after the public have suggested names.

"This case is remembered by a lot of people who still care.

"This case will never be closed and we are determined to get justice for Lisa's family."

Sadly that justice will not be seen by Lisa's mother, Christine, who died in 2017, aged 69, after a short battle with cancer.

In 2011, using the partial DNA sample, GMP carried out a mass swabbing of men in Leigh and Wigan.

But as it didn't identify Lisa's killer, a reasonable assumption is that he is either dead, or now lives elsewhere and has never been in trouble since.

But that doesn't mean that there isn't a clue to his identity out there that could be matched with the DNA sample.

Indeed, if he is alive - he may still be caught due to the DNA of his relatives and advances in technology.

Andrea Ashcroft Aldred, who knew Lisa, and Ryan Daly have set up the social media group, Let's get justice for Lisa Jane Hession and her mum Christine.

Ryan said the murder remained a shadow over Leigh. "It will be 36 years in December since it happened. It's still a big thing in Leigh, even now. People want to know who the culprit is.

"Personally I think the police should do another mass DNA swabbing across the town, as with more advances since the first, it could help catch the person responsible, if they have living relatives nearby.

"I just hope eventually they catch the man responsible."

Andrea said the memory of Lisa remains vivid, every year, near the festive season, when she was killed.

"Lisa is always on my mind, as I start to think about Christmas, my family, my daughters and grandchildren.

"It makes me think of Christine and her heartache, her never becoming a nana or seeing Lisa marry or becoming a mother and then I think of Lisa and how much life she had snatched away.

"It really isn't fair that (the killer) has walked and lived life for 35 years, probably got children, may have been married - having what Christine didn't."

Ryan said:"When I started the campaign in October 2016, it was to raise awareness, as I thought it was tragic that Lisa’s Mum passed away, without ever getting closure.

"So Andrea and I decided to raise awareness about the case, and especially because it happened in our hometown, and Lisa was also Andrea’s friend."

A £50,000 reward for information leading to the identification and conviction of Lisa's killer remains unclaimed.

In 2018, with the help of the Manchester Evening News posters appealing for information about the murder were distributed in Leigh town centre.

In 2014, three years before she died, Lisa's mum, Christine, said: "It's always there at the back of your mind, knowing that nobody has paid for what they have done to your child.

"They may be married or have children of their own, living a good life.

"I don't know, but they have not paid for what they have done and if no one comes forward they never will."

Anita Webb, Lisa's best friend still feels guilty that life has brought her everything Lisa should have had - a career, children, marriage, and her own home.

The pair were inseparable, travelling to school together at Bedford High, in Leigh, spending summer evenings hanging out in Pennington Park, listening to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance album.

“She had a perfect physique, with cross country for Leigh Harriers, and gymnastics at school. Lisa had got it all, but she didn’t know it, and that was the real inner beauty with her, that I cherished. She had depth, she was authentic. She was special.

“Even as the years go by you don’t forget. Everytime something bad happens it reminds me of what happened in 1984
