Coach Chris Fagan will look to elimination final opponents Richmond for inspiration as Brisbane attempt to take the first step towards correcting a poor AFL finals ledger.
The Lions have a 1-5 finals record across the past three seasons and will again depart the play-offs early if they lose to the Tigers at the Gabba on Thursday night.
But Fagan cited Richmond's elimination final exits under Damien Hardwick in 2013, 2014 and 2015 before their breakthrough flag in 2017 as a progression the Lions could imitate.
"We should be getting there," he told Fox Footy's AFL 360.
"I look at the Richmond team that we play and remember back when Dimma got them into three elimination finals in a row and they couldn't actually win and then they missed the finals completely then came out and won the premiership the year after that.
"I'm a bit of a historian on the game, and I look at teams and their progression towards hopefully winning premierships, and usually there's a few disappointments along the way, and I feel like we've had those in the last three years.
"We haven't been poor performers in finals, we've won one and we've actually lost one by one point and another by three points.
"So it's not like we've been beaten up in finals. We've actually done quite well, just haven't quite been able to get over the line.
"But I'm just hoping those experiences will harden us and prepare us for what lies ahead."
Fagan said it was "disappointing" to hear question marks over Brisbane's character after their 58-point round 23 loss to Melbourne that cost the Lions a top-four spot.
He suggested perceptions of Brisbane didn't take into account their overall form across the season.
"You've got to judge a team over a period of time. To be able to win the number of games that we've been able to win over the last four years in the home and away suggests that we're a little bit tougher than what maybe people are talking about at the moment," he said.
"I actually haven't listened to any of it to tell you the truth, I'm hearing it for the first time, but I can understand why that's being said.
"But the only way that we can answer it really is by the way that we perform on Thursday night and hopefully we can do the right thing and answer the question."
