Lions belt Bombers in rebound AFLW win

Brisbane have rebounded hard from last week's upset AFLW loss to Richmond, belting Essendon by 44 points at Moreton Bay.

The Bombers did not kick their first score until 13 minutes into the third term on Sunday, with the Lions in charge throughout on their way to a 8.14 (62) to 3.0 (18) win.

It was a banner day for Brisbane, as star defender Kate Lutkins made a successful return from an ACL rupture in her right knee.

Lutkins suffered the injury on January 9, meaning she was back in action in less than nine months.

The Lions hit the post four times in the first half, and five for the match, with goalkicking inaccuracy the only weak part of their game.

Jesse Wardlaw kicked 2.3, including two of those 'posters', taking the Brisbane key forward to 11 goals for the season.

Wardlaw shares the league goalkicking lead with St Kilda star Kate Shierlaw.

Lions onballer Ally Anderson racked up a game-high 23 disposals, taking her past 1000 career AFLW possessions.

She is the sixth player and the first Indigenous woman to reach the milestone.

After only managing one goal in last week's match against the Tigers - their first loss of the season - the free-scoring Lions swamped Essendon from the start despite the wet conditions.

Brisbane had 14 inside-50s to one in the first quarter, but butchered several scoring shots and only managed 2.7.

Essendon did not manage their second inside-50 until 15 minutes into the second quarter.

The Lions' physical pressure was first-class, highlighted by a brutal tackle from Zimmie Farquarhson in the second term.

Essendon rallied in the second half, with Jo Doonan kicking their first goal from a free kick in the third term and Maddy Prespakis quickly adding their second.

Prespakis again impressed for the Bombers, racking up 20 possessions and nine tackles, but the expansion team was given a reality check by one of the premiership favourites.

Brisbane had 32 clearances to 15 and dominated inside-50s 45-13, although Essendon won the tackle count 58-56.
