Lionel Richie opens up on a side of King Charles' personality 'no one knows about'

Lionel Richie has branded King Charles III a "secret comedian", with the American Idol judge and beloved singer spilling on the monarch's "amazing sense of humour".

The 73-year-old Motown icon has opened up in a new interview about what it was like to perform at the King of England's Coronation concert, with him revealing rare insights into his chats with the King.

Crooning a string of his hits at the star-studded concert held in the grounds of Windsor Castle on May 7, Lionel sung his hit All Night Long, which led to the crowned monarch, 74, and his wife Queen Camilla, 75, even getting up out of their seats for a boogie.

Lionel has now spoken of his bond with King Charles and how he had known him for quite some time, with him even spilling on how the monarch ended up making an appearance on American Idol.

The singer has known the monarch for a while, with him even appointed First Global Ambassador and First Chairman of the Global Ambassador Group for The Prince's Trust in 2019.

In a new interview with Extra, Lionel revealed an insight of King Charles' humour, with him gushing over his "secret".

"I've known the King quite a long time. He does have this amazing sense of humor that no one knows about. He's a secret comedian," he revealed to the outlet.

The singer went on to touch on King Charles agreeing to appear on American Idol, with him saying: "For him to actually take the step and go out of the comfort zone — which was actually his comfort zone — he was hamming it up."

Lionel went on to reveal his "highlight" from the Coronation, which provides an insight into how the King agreed to his American TV stint.

"The highlight for me was that I actually walked up to the King the day after the coronation and said, 'Would you like to be on American Idol and he said, 'Yeah'," Lionel spilled.

He then went on to reveal that Charles asked: "Alright if I bring the Queen?" to which Lionel replied "Uh, yeah!" before branding them an "amazing couple" in his chat with the outlet.

King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla appeared on American Idol with Lionel Richie and Katy Perry, with them appearing via livestream on the show after the Coronation concert on May 7.
