Lionel Messi became the first man to score in every knockout game during a World Cup in Sunday’s final against France.

Already the tournament’s top scorer, the 35-year-old netted his sixth goal in Qatar with a penalty to put Argentina ahead of the world champions inside Lusail Stadium.

Messi, who has already confirmed he is playing in his last World Cup, also scored against Australia, the Netherlands and Croatia as his country bid to win their first world title since 1986.

Angel Di Maria put La Albiceleste two goals to the good before half-time, putting Messi on the verge of winning the one trophy to have eluded him so far.

Prior to this year’s World Cup, Messi had never scored in the knockout rounds despite reaching 2014’s final in Brazil.

In total, the Paris Saint-Germain forward has scored 12 World Cup goals, sitting four behind Miroslav Klose’s record of 16.
