Lionel Messi matches unwanted record after PSG failure in last-gasp Real Madrid win

No player has missed more penalties in the Champions League than Lionel Messi.

The Paris Saint-Germain star landed the unwanted record after Thibaut Courtois saved his effort at the Parc des Princes last night.

Messi’s blushes were spared when Kylian Mbappe struck in the last minute to land a crucial victory over Real Madrid in their first leg encounter.

But it was another tough night for the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who toiled on a difficult night for many attackers.

PSG and Real Madrid had been tipped as pre-tournament favourites in the summer but have met in the first knockout round of the tournament.

With so much riding on the result, it is no surprise to see the match decided by slim margins.

However, when Dani Carvajal brought down Mbappe for a penalty - all eyes were on Messi to convert from the spot.

But once again, the Argentine failed to do so and that is now the fifth time he has missed a penalty in the Champions League.

That means he draws level with Thierry Henry for the most missed spot-kicks - a record that the mercurial superstar would not want on his mantle.

It was a fine dive to the right from Courtois, who had a brilliant night after a string of top saves to deny PSG.

"In these kinds of games you know that, as a goalkeeper, you're going to have quite a bit to do," the former Chelsea keeper told BT Sport.

"I'd studied Messi's penalties a lot and I tried to play with him when I was on the line. You've also got to have that little bit of luck, too."

But Mbappe was too clever at the death when he stroked the ball through the Belgian’s legs after a sublime piece of skill to bamboozle Lucas Vasquez and Eder Militao.

BT Sport pundit Joe Cole was full of praise for the Frenchman, who is out of contract at PSG at the end of the season.

"He was brilliant from the off and I don't know how you defend against him as a manager, he's a genius," he said.

"[With PSG] having Messi and Neymar supplying Mbappe there's no reason why he can't get another five or six goals in the knockout stages and PSG win it.

"It is possible. They are not my favourites, but it is possible."
