Lionel Messi facing strict rules under new PSG regime including phone ban

Lionel Messi has been told he must abide by a strict set of rules ahead of his second season at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentine icon is in the midst of pre-season training as he prepares for his second campaign with the French giants. He is working under a new manager at the Parc des Princes, with former Nice and Lille boss Christophe Galtier replacing Messi’s compatriot Mauricio Pochettino at the helm.

The French schemer has brought in a fresh set of rules at the club, with Messi and his illustrious teammates expected to toe the line. Players have been banned from using mobile phones during breakfast and lunch meal times, while it is expected that the group dines at the PSG training centre, barring exceptional circumstances.

That is according to continental outlet Record, which claims punctuality is also being handed significant attention next season. Players are being told to arrive at training between 8:30am to 8:45am, with a late arrival of just a minute likely to be punished with a ban from taking part in that morning's session.

Galtier has reportedly introduced the rules in order to improve the atmosphere at the club following a somewhat underwhelming campaign last time out. The Parisians reclaimed their Ligue 1 title - ironically Galtier toppled PSG at the top of the standings with Lille the previous season - but failed to impress in the Champions League.

They were eliminated at the last-16 stage after eventual winners Real Madrid staged a memorable comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Messi himself also had an underwhelming campaign following his free transfer arrival from Barcelona. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner only scored six league goals - his lowest season tally since 2006.

The 35-year-old admitted that it was difficult to adjust to life in the French capital but is determined to make a success of himself at PSG. Speaking to TyC Sports, he said: “At Barcelona, I had it all. I was used to having teammates that I had played with for many years. It was hard to leave but I will continue at PSG.

"This year it has been difficult for me to enjoy myself but I want to do that next season."

The French club have been busy adding to their squad ahead of the 2022/23 season. They signed Vitinha from Porto whilst young striker Hugo Ekitike has arrived from Reims on a season-long loan.

Nuno Mendes’ switch from Sporting Lisbon has also been made permanent after the Portuguese defender impressed on-loan.
