Lionel Messi ends Keanu Baccus' incredible World Cup journey as St Mirren star grabs post-match selfie with Argentina legend

An inspired Lionel Messi performance ended Keanu Baccus’ incredible World Cup journey as the battling Aussies were narrowly beaten by Argentina.

St Mirren star Baccus was handed his first start in arguably the biggest Socceroos clash in the country’s history, as they looked to reach the quarter final stage for the first ever time.

Unfortunately they found seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi still at his dazzling best, with the 35-year-old PSG superstar calmly slotting home the opener in the first half after a very positive start from the Aussies.

Despite staying in the last 16 tie throughout, a goalkeeping error from Mat Ryan allowed Argentina to double their lead late on through young Man City striker Julian Alvarez.

The Socceroos fought bravely to the end and managed to grab one goal back through Craig Goodwin’s deflected strike.

But unfortunately for them it was too little, too late as the determined Aussies’ impressive run in Qatar finally came to an end.

Baccus, who made history for the Saints by becoming the first player from the club to ever play at a World Cup, made four appearances overall, a record that could well stand for a long time yet.

After grabbing a coveted selfie with former Barcelona icon Messi after the game, the 24-year-old also took in England's last 16 clash with Senegal the following night.
