Lionel Messi achieves World Cup record that can never be broken

Lionel Messi has broken plenty of records in his incredible career, but he has already claimed another one today that can never be beaten.

The 35-year-old footballing great is hoping to put the cherry on the cake of his sporting life with victory in today's World Cup final with Argentina against France. And the little magician could barely have got off to a better start by converting a penalty in the 23rd minute to put the South Americans ahead.

Arriving in Qatar four weeks ago, Messi had never scored a World Cup goal in a knockout fixture. But that is an unwanted statistic that has been banished to the dustbin.

By scoring against France on Sunday, Messi has become the only player ever to score in every single round of the World Cup. Goals in the group stages against Saudi Arabia and Mexico were followed up with strikes against Australia in the Round of 16, the Netherlands in the quarter-final and Croatia in the semi-final.

Now has has completed the set by sending France keeper Huge Loris the wrong way from the spot in the World Cup final, after Angel Di Maria was pushed over in the box by Ousmane Dembele.

It's just another record for the seven times Ballon d'Or winner, who stands on the brink of the ultimate glory with Argentina, to go with his Copa America triumph.

Messi's goal against France was the 792nd of his club and country career, which has seen him win 41 team trophies, with a 42nd within touching distance.
