Brisbane forward Zac Bailey has a chance of playing in Sunday's crucial match against Carlton at the Gabba after scans cleared him of serious kidney damage.

Bailey spent Sunday night in a Melbourne hospital after he was left coughing up blood following an on-field incident with Richmond's Marlion Pickett in the Lions' loss to the Tigers at the MCG earlier in the day.

The 22-year-old was released from hospital on Monday and was cleared to fly back to Brisbane, the Lions said in a statement.

Brisbane said Bailey would be further assessed later in the week to determine his availability to play Carlton.

The Lions will be breathing a sigh of relief after it was deemed the injury wasn't serious.

Earlier this year, Fremantle youngster Jye Amiss required surgery on his kidney after a hit in a WAFL match.

Bailey has kicked 29 goals in 18 games this season and is an important member of Brisbane's forward line.

The Lions' top-four hopes are hanging in the balance after the seven-point loss to Richmond dropped them to fifth, just percentage adrift of the fourth-placed Swans.
