Linfield boss David Healy on 'splashing the cash' before the transfer window shuts

Linfield boss David Healy insists he won’t panic buy before the transfer window slams shut despite being told there’s money to spend at Windsor Park.

The Blues have been relatively quiet in the Jauary market so far with Rangers youngster Chris McKee and Knockbreda striker Ethan Devine the only arrivals this month.

Highly-rated right-back Trai Hume was also a high-profile departure after joining League One giants Sunderland three weeks ago.

But while some onlookers believe Linfield are in need of reinforcements, primarily in attack, Healy insists he won’t be splashing the cash to appease the online critics.

“We all want fresh blood and if we see that something becomes available...” he said.

“The good thing is the chairman and board of directors have so much money that they’re actually trying to get me to spend it.

“But I’m a manager who will take time and make sure that who we bring to this club is of the quality to actually play for Linfield.

“I could have signed five or six players in January with the contacts I have and whatever else. Easy. But there’s no point signing players to put them on the bench or in the stand.

“We’re possibly short in numbers at the moment but in two weeks we’ll have Cammy Palmer, Chris Shields, Jordan Stewart and Conor Pepper back in and around the team.

“I have so much belief in the squad of players we have here. Others might doubt that and I may be proven wrong over time, but I have a real belief in this group and I am happy with what we have.”

There’s a good chance Healy allowed himself a wry smile after the two strikers he selected to feature on Saturday were both on target in a 2-0 win over Glenavon.

Christy Mazinga made it 19 goals in all competitions with a sweeping finish before January loan signing McKee headed home his first goal for the club.

“I keep hearing and we keep getting asked when we’re bringing centre forwards into the club, but the pleasing thing for me were the goal scorers,” said Healy.

“The centre forward who started the game scored and the centre forward who came on also scored… so good work by the first team coach and the assistant manager.”

Linfield, who are three points clear of Glentoran at the league summit, are next in action on Tuesday night when they face third-placed Cliftonville at Solitude.
