Line of Duty ‘returning for seventh series’ as BBC star reveals comeback talks

Line of Duty is reportedly coming back for a seventh series (pictured, Martin Compston and Vicky McClure) - (BBC)

Line of Duty star Christina Chong has hinted that the show is returning for a seventh series.

The BBC drama, centred around anti-corruption unit AC-12, came to a gripping conclusion in 2021 after six series.

Chong, 41, who played DI Nicky Rogerson in series two and six, revealed she has been asked about her availability for next year.

“So I have been asked about a season, is it seven? Yeah,” the actress said when quizzed about the show’s return at the Hollywood Saturn Awards

“Potentially Nicola Rogerson will be back for season seven,” she teased.

Chong’s character first appeared on the police thriller in 2014 and became a key member of the Major Violent Crime unit.

DI Rogerson found herself enmeshed in the murky world of AC-12, becoming a love interest for DS Steve Arnott and turning informant for him and the squad.

Line of Duty attracted huge audiences, with the last episode of series six - which revealed the identity of the antagonist “H” - drawing in 16.44 million viewers, one of the largest TV audiences recorded during the Covid pandemic.

Chong’s bombshell about the show comes after Adrian Dunbar let slip that the drama is likely to return for another series.

“I hope so... looks like it!” Dunbar, who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings, said on Times Radio.

“All the signals and everything is [there] but as somebody said, until the script hits the desk you can’t be 100 per cent sure. So we’re all hoping that someone somewhere will make an announcement.

“I can tell you one thing... the day they announce it, it’s going to burn up the internet.”

Martin Compston has also talked about the possibility of a new series.

“I just don’t know. I’m busy next year. Vicky’s [McClure] ridiculously busy, so’s Adrian. If there’s a story Jed wants to tell, he’ll come to us,” the Scottish actor told The Times.

“As soon as there’s some news we’ll let you know, but right now there’s nothing there. I’d like to pull my waistcoat out again.”

He added, jokingly: “I like a waistcoat but I can’t wear them now; it’s like putting on Steve’s character.”
