Lindt’s DIY advent calendars are going TikTok viral - but there’s one thing that disappointed me this year

When you’re an adult and you have to buy your own advent calendar, you might as well make it a good one, right? That’s why every year I’ve always made the trip to Cheshire Oaks to make my own at the Lindt outlet.

I’ve been doing this now for the last four years, after my mum stopped picking me up my favourite Milkybar calendar from Sainsbury’s. Gutted though I was, it was the best thing that could have happened, as I then discovered the pick and mix calendars at the Lindt store.

However, when I visited the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet in October, I was a little bit disappointed with a major change they’ve made to the DIY design this year.

The calendar itself is going viral on TikTok at the moment, after mum-of-nine Danielle, at @ thesymestribe , shared a video from her local store. Her post has racked up 830,000 views and thousands of likes, with shoppers desperate to get one for themselves.

One commented: “I did this with my partner and we picked chocolates for each other - it’s such a cute activity!” One posted added: “I’d get all red original ones," while another added: “I want one SOO bad.”

This year, the calendars cost £12 and offer 24 slots with which to fill with whichever Lindt flavours you wish. But the biggest difference is that the 25th door has been ditched!

In previous years, there were 24 doors for truffle sized treats followed by a long rectangular door for a Lindt chocolate bar to get Christmas day off to the perfect start. It’s safe to say that I was a little disappointed, partly because £12 isn’t exactly cheap for an advent calendar, but I was still excited to go ahead and pick out my flavours.

I filled my box with a mixture of strawberry and cream, white chocolate, salted caramel and the classic milk chocolate truffles, adding in some of the more unusual flavours like popcorn and Stracciatella- devastatingly, chocolate orange was out of stock.

There were also some more obscure flavours like matcha, pistachio and mango, but I decided to stick to what I know that I like, to avoid finding one I don’t like behind one of the December doors.

While making my own advent calendar was a lot of fun, and has got me excited for the Christmas countdown, there are plenty of other ways to get your Lindt chocolate fix for less.

On the Lindt website, you can get two 200g boxes for £9 instead of £11 , getting you an extra 100g of chocolate for £1 less than the advent calendar. You could opt for the assorted box to get a varied selection, or pick your favourite flavour for a morning treat throughout the month.

The chocolate retailer has also got a bargain deal on an advent calendar bundle, which offers four advent calendars for £30 , down from £40, which works out at £7.50 each. You can shop for more Lindt festive goodies on the website.
