'Like describing Usain Bolt as a jogger' - national media react to what Luis Diaz did for Liverpool at Brighton

Liverpool earned a crucial 2-0 victory away to Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Luis Diaz opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a brave header that saw him flattened by the hosts' keeper Robert Sanchez in the aftermath.

While the check for a red card resulted in no action, Liverpool ensured they would return to Merseyside with all three points with a calmly-taken Mohamed Salah penalty in the second-half.

As the Reds continue to keep the pace with Manchester City, here's what the national media made of the performance at the Amex.

Greatness will not be thrust upon Klopp’s men; they must achieve it

Sam Dalling, The Guardian

"Three points forward; once more a three-point gap. And on goes the world’s premier staring contest. Blinking is strictly prohibited.

"With focus narrowed on Mohamed Salah after his agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, responded to Jürgen Klopp’s comments about a contract extension with seven laughing emojis, the Egyptian did not take his eye off the ball.

"His emphatic second-half penalty, thumped down the middle in front of the travelling fans, sealed Liverpool’s eighth straight league win.

"Luis Díaz once again showed why, should the worst happen, life can go on. To say he has hit the ground running is like describing Usain Bolt as a jogger.

"On his first league start away from Anfield he flicked, kicked, twisted and spun to the ground. Each time he got up and cracked on, including thankfully after nodding Liverpool into the lead before being flattened by Robert Sánchez.

"Next for Liverpool comes their game in hand: a trip to Arsenal, who have replaced their soft underbelly with snarl and bite. But greatness will not be thrust upon Klopp’s men; they must achieve it."

Luis Diaz passed the test with flying colours

Joe Bernstein, Mail on Sunday

"For all the talent at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp demands courage as well. His latest signing Luis Diaz passed the test with flying colours, albeit painfully

"The £37million Colombian is feted for blistering pace and quick feet. Yet we saw the other side at Brighton yesterday, putting himself in danger to score the key opening goal after 19 minutes with the bravest of headers.

"What is certain is that Diaz’s goal was the key moment of the game. Brighton had dominated the early stages and could have scored themselves through Leandro Trossard and Neal Maupay.

"But once Liverpool went in front, there was little doubt they would go on to record their eighth consecutive Premier League win to move back within three points of leaders Manchester City – the gap having been 14 in mid-January. "

Could not have been more routine for Liverpool

Jim White, The Telegraph

"As wins go, this could not have been more routine for Liverpool. Acting as the perfect hosts, Brighton tested their visitors with just the one shot on target all game.

"Not that it looked as if he were in any discomfort: Liverpool were in charge for all but ten minutes of this game. And while Brighton struggled to find the net, goals are a very different matter for Klopp’s players.

"As they scored in each half to record their eighth win on the trot, they notched up a couple of notable statistical landmarks. Their second strike, for instance, was the club’s 2,000th Premier League goal.

"And, in scoring it, Mo Salah, recorded his twentieth league goal for the fourth successive season."

Salah did his talking on the pitch

Paul Gorst, Liverpool Echo

"In a pre-match dominated by the noise around Mohamed Salah's contract, it was his second-half celebration with the Liverpool fans that drowned it out.

"Salah's 20th goal of an increasingly productive Premier League campaign was the moment this game drifted out of sight for a spirited Brighton to take the visiting Reds to within three points of Manchester City at the top.

"But it was also the moment that the man so affectionately known as the 'Egyptian King' washed away the fuss kicked up by his own camp on the eve of this vital clash at the Amex.

"It didn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out the source of one particular journalist's story on Friday evening with Salah's agent clearly keeping himself busy in an attempt to shape the narrative to suit his client.

"Salah, as he prefers to do, did his talking on the pitch instead, bringing up goal No.20 in the Premier League for a fourth time with a well-taken penalty to make it 2-0."
