Lights, doorbell, action – it sounds cool but is smart home security any good?

Home security is always at the forefront of our minds, whether you’re going away for a few days or feeling vulnerable when you’re home alone. Fortunately, over the last few years there has been an explosion in smart home security measures, now every home can set up their own CCTV-esq systems.

While in theory a smart home security system might sounds cool, what does it actually entail and how can it help protect your home?

What is a smart home security system?

A smart home security system is simply an integrated security system made up of sensors and cameras that can be controlled via your mobile phone. While you can piece some home smart home security systems together yourself, there are a number of packages out there that pull together all camera, sensors and central units, and offer 24/7 monitoring for you too.

EE smart home security powered by Verisure, offers these type of smart home security packages. They have made it unbelievably easy to protect your home offering an essentials package that includes shock sensors and an internal camera, connected to a main hub that will alert you of intruders. If you wanted to further protect your home you can also added on the security of a video doorbell monitoring the outside of your home and even wireless outdoor cameras.

Does a smart home security system deter burglars?

A smart security system might sounds great, but the key questions to finding out whether it is any good is if it helps to deter burglars. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that a well - maintained alarm system can help prevent intruders, and if you go with an EE system each of the monthly home security plans comes with alarm maintenance services.

However, if you live in a house and are looking for your security to principally be a deterrent we’d recommend selecting a package with a video door bell or wireless external camera included. If a burglar can see that there is a camera mounted on a property they know that breaking in will prove more risky.

Should you go for a professionally monitored home security system?

This is all down to personal preference, if you are on a tight budget you can find plenty of video door bells or home security cameras on the internet to piece together your own home security system. However, the big difference between a DIY system versus a professionally installed system from a brand such as EE and Verisure is that it is professionally monitored.

If your alarm is triggered, Verisure will call the police for you in case of a break in, so you’re not left panicking if you get an unwelcome visitor while you’re on holiday. If you’d like the added security that a professional security service is looking out for your home 24/7, it is worth going for.
