Lightning strike blasts chimney off roof as man sat in his living room

A man was sitting in his living room when lightning struck his home, causing major damage, including blasting his chimney off. The terrifying incident, which shocked homeowner Derek Nelson, took place during an intense thunderstorm in Dublin.

The property in Birchwood Heights in Tallaght has suffered severe damage to the roof after it was impacted by lightning. It is believed members of the community rallied round Mr Nelson after the ordeal, reports DublinLive.

The man was relaxing in his sitting room when the thunderstorm, of which a Status Yellow weather warning was issued, struck the roof of his home. Thankfully, Mr Nelson was said to be unharmed.

Locals reportedly climbed ladders to try and make the roof stable after it had been hit on Monday night. Ten other counties in Ireland were warned over the storms that have said to have wreaked havoc across the country.

There was major disruption at Dublin Airport with eleven flights diverted and many more holidaymakers hit with lengthy delays.

A spokesman for DAA, who operate the airport, told Dublin Live: "Electrical storms in the vicinity of Dublin Airport led to some disruption on Monday evening with a number flights being diverted to other airports.

"A total of 11 flights were diverted, with all aircraft returning to Dublin Airport later in the evening.”
