Greater Manchester has been hit with heavy rain and thunderstorms for a second day in a row.
Just before 5pm on Sunday evening (July 9), a roaring bellow of thunder could be heard from across the city-region. Residents in Tameside, Trafford, Bury, Stockport and South Manchester all reported thunder with some also experiencing lightning.
Videos sent into the M.E.N from Old Trafford, Bury and Didsbury showed the dramatic lightning the moment it struck. Photos also captured the lightning in Denton and Hillgate in Stockport, near Stockport County FC’s Edgeley Park arena.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms was in place for Greater Manchester yesterday - from 8am until 11.59pm - as well as much of England and Scotland.
Speaking of the warning in place yesterday, the Met Office's Dan Suri said: “Despite the hot start to the weekend weather for most, Saturday’s thundery breakdown brings about a transition to cooler, showery conditions for Sunday onwards well into next week.
“The main message at the moment is to be aware of the potential for heavy downpours with lightning, hail and gusty winds on Saturday. Please keep in touch with the latest forecasts because although many places will avoid the worst conditions some quite severe and impactful storms are expected.”
Despite today’s thunderstorms, the weather has continued to remain relatively warm with temperatures fixed at around 23C.
The thunderstorms are expected to continue until around 7pm when things will turn cloudy. There are expected to be sunny intervals tomorrow alongside more heavy rain at lunchtime. There are also predicted thunderstorms for Tuesday afternoon.
The RAC said the weather could have an impact on travel conditions. Rod Dennis from RAC said: “Driving conditions will rapidly deteriorate wherever these thundery showers break out – one moment the road will be dry, the next drivers will be faced with heavy rain, hail and potentially gusty winds as well.
"It’s therefore crucial drivers reduce their speed accordingly, leaving a larger gap between themselves and the vehicle in front. It’s also important to ensure car headlights and taillights are switched on – but not fog lights as these risk dazzling other drivers.”
