A pilot is in a critical condition after his light plane crashed at an airport in Sydney's southwest.

The single-engine, four-seater aircraft came down at Bankstown Airport about 3.40pm on Friday, Fire and Rescue NSW said.

The plane flipped on impact, trapping the male pilot.

Rescuers were able to extract the man aged in his 60s from the wreckage and paramedics were treating him when he went into cardiac arrest.

He was revived through CPR and taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition with injuries to his spine, leg, chest and arm.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate the cause of the crash.
