Lifeline Lanarkshire bus service appeals for new driver

A driver is needed for a lifeline community bus service which has supported the people of East Kilbride for four decades.

East Kilbride Community Transport is looking for someone new to take the wheel of their brand new minibus following the retirement of long-serving driver Stephen Kostric.

As well as driving, the successful candidate will also be expected to coordinate trips for other drivers and maintain the buses - a role which Stephen successfully carried out for 15 years.

Secretary June Harpum said: "We are losing our longest serving driver, Stephen Kostric, he is retiring at the end of May.

"Stephen was not only a driver but he also looked after the bookings, coordinated the trips for the other drivers, maintained the buses, booked servicing for the buses and arranged repairs and MOT's. He's going to be missed.

"As a result we will need to find another driver, paid on a part-time basis with a minimum of 10 hours per week, and also a transport coordinator. We will need to find a driver before the beginning of August when the schools go back."

East Kilbride Community Transport was founded in 1983 after former chair and community stalwart Ina Cumming realised the isolation some people felt, particularly older residents or those with additional needs or impairments.

The non-profit organisation serves schools, nurseries, churches and countless clubs and employs two drivers.

The service works from early morning to late at night, seven days a week throughout the year, thanks to the dedication and hard work of June, chairperson Ann Cushley, her drivers and the small committee of volunteers.

June added: "East Kilbride Community Transport is still managing to survive but we have had real problems with one of our buses and, as we only have two, we decided we had to do something about it.

"We couldn't afford to buy a bus so we have to lease one. We are also hoping to be able to get a ramp to make it easier for people with walking difficulties to get on and off the bus, but we are still trying to find someone who could supply a ramp for us."

Anyone interested in driving or helping out the charity is urged to contact June on 07849486937 or Ann on 07950509437.

Applicants must have a clean driving licence and the successful applicant must complete a MiDAS minibus driving test.
