A lifeboat was called out in north Northumberland after a dog fell into a harbour.

The young Labrador fell into the water at Beadnell Harbour shortly after 9am on Thursday and its owner was unable to recover it. The lifeboat crew were paged to assembled and the Inshore Lifeboat was taken by road from Seahouses and launched at Beadnell.

Local coastguard were also in attendance but by the time the lifeboat arrived, the dog had been safely recovered to the deck of a fishing boat in the harbour. It was taken aboard the lifeboat and landed safely on the beach where it was reunited with its owner.

According to the RNLI, there is always concern that dog owners may try to enter the water to rescue their pet and get themselves into difficulty. They have warned dog owners to avoid this so as not to put their own lives at risk.

Ian Clayton, Seahouses Lifeboat Press Officer, said: "There have been many incidents where dog owners have entered the water to attempt to rescue their pets. We strongly advise dog owners not to do this, as they may be putting their own lives at risk.

"Leave it to the Coastguard and RNLI whose role is to save lives at sea. They have the equipment, knowledge and skill to handle such situations safely".
