Air smells like cake for neighbours of Nottinghamshire industrial estate

Residents living next to a Nottinghamshire industrial site say the air by their home often smells like cake - thanks to a food manufacturer nearby. Families love living on the Northern Road Industrial Estate in Newark, where the air has a sweeter smell due to the Bakkavor Desserts factory.

The industrial site is home to dozens of large businesses and factories, as well as many nearby homes scattered in and around the estate. Self-employed, Susan Hobson, 51, says she loves living on the estate and that it's quieter than where she has previously lived.

She said: "There is a bit of noise here but it's never bothered me. We have lovely neighbours and we don't really get a lot of traffic."

When asked about the smell, Susan described the estate of having "the smell of sugar." She said: "When we sit out the back you can often smell donuts from the cake factory.

"I've never had a problem with it. Some mornings it smells like donuts, but after a while you can get a bit sick of it." Susan said she hasn't got a problem with the industrial estate being so close by.

She said: "Over the years it has got a bit bigger and noisier. We got the house because we liked it, we didn't even think about what's around the back."

"I'm more than happy here." However, Susan added that she has had issues with lost lorry drivers, one of which "took the old fence out" at the back of her garden, and another cracked her driveway in an attempt to turn around.

Retired, Derrick Patter, 68, has lived in his home near the estate for more than 20 years. When asked if he could smell sugary treats in the air, he said: "Yeah we do, I don't mind really.

"It's not a bad smell, it's a nice smell. Only next door makes a better smell when she cooks her cakes."

Despite living so close to the estate, Derrick says he only hears noise from traffic rather than the factories. He said: "At 5 o'clock when the traffic is coming out we are getting more trouble from the odd person with noisy exhausts. We can't hear any noise from the factory or the industrial estate.

"We had to be realistic and sensible about it when we bought this place. We knew that the industrial estate was there, but the only noise we can really hear is traffic."

He added that although the traffic can be disruptive, it's understandable as "there must be a couple of thousand people that work on there now."

Retired, Jennifer Sykes, 70, has lived next to the estate for 44 years. She said: "It's a bit bigger now than when we first moved here.

"The only thing that bothers me for the most part is there is a gate somewhere, and every time they open it they beep for ages, but you get used to those things. We've been here 40 odd years so I'm quite happy."

When asked if she can also smell cakes from her home, Jennifer said: "Yeah we do, yeah it's just in the air, it really doesn't bother us too much." Production supervisor, Lee Frost, 48, can also smell cake from his home.

He said: "The smell doesn't bother me, it's cake so it's not a bad smell." Lee has lived on the industrial estate for almost 20 years and said he's had no trouble.

He said: "You get lost drivers, but that's just every now and then to be honest. We also get Skania making a lot of noise during the night as they operate 24 hours a day.

When asked about traffic, he added: "They all park along the street here. Then they walk through the bridle path and walk into the industrial estate, ass there's no parking where they work.
