Amongst the busyness of the Nottingham city centre, you can find a quiet and unique private estate tucked behind Nottingham Castle. The unique architecture, the traditional gas lamps, and the green space makes The Park is one of the most picturesque parts of Nottingham.
The Park started life as Nottingham Castle's deer park but in the 19th century that housing appeared. Neighbours in the Park Estate say it’s ‘beautiful’ and ‘unique’ due to the architecture and old buildings.
Resident Tim Morrell, told Nottinghamshire Live that ‘it’s beautiful in many ways’. The 46-year-old said: “It’s a unique area because of the architecture and because of the old buildings.

“It’s a lot of old Victorian houses, from the 1860s/80s. If you think about who used to live there, they have servants quarters and are kitchen entrances.
“A lot of these are bigger properties. It’s just beautiful, I walk around here everyday thinking ‘if i won the lottery I’d buy that there’. It’s very quiet and safe. There’s the parks. It’s just beautiful in all those ways.”
A noticeable feature in The Park is its traditional lighting system. The street lamp posts are extremely rare being lit by gas compared to electric lighting.
Another resident, George Dickinson, shares what the different lamp posts are like. The 22-year-old teacher said: “It’s nice and very quiet. It’s nice with all the buildings, lots of different buildings with different designs. It’s well maintained.
“The lamp posts are unique, they’re actually gas not electric. They are very dim, it’s dark at night. They can go out, it’s fire. The roundabout up at the top, the green spaces between the houses that’s different.”
Bridget Welsleby, 63, has worked in The Park estate 28 years - she told Nottinghamshire Live that it’s a peaceful place where you can hear the birds.
Bridget said: “It’s beautiful. It’s a chill place next to town. All you can hear is the birds, you can’t hear anything else. It’s lovely. People where I live have never been, I tell them to go have a look, it’s beautiful. It’s just beautiful.”
