Residents living in a Nottinghamshire town admitted they were not suprised their area had been ranked as the best in for access to local jobs. Researchers at niceareas.co.uk compiled a list of villages, towns and suburbs based on aspects that make locations attractive to those looking for a home.
The top area for the place with the highest local jobs was Carlton. It had a rating of 89 out of 100 for local access to local jobs. Coming in second was Sneinton with a score of 88 out of 100.
Local businesses on Carlton Hill shared what they thought about this research and why they think it’s one of the best places for access to local jobs in Nottingham.
Andrew Morley, 56, who works at Bubblelush alongside his wife who is the store owner, told Nottinghamshire Live about the town's diverse high street and said many of the opportunities may come from the bigger chains.

Mr Morley said: “There are quite a few new places, there’s Big Mikes, apart from that it’s the same businesses. Probably four new businesses in the past two years. There are a lot of traditional shops. Those traditional shops have no new people - in the past two years of the pandemic it’s slowed down the people, there’s a lack of people in the high street.
“It’s nice to see Carlton Hill with only one shop closed - the old food takeaway, if you look around every shop on the high street it’s occupied which is unusual. I don’t know if there’s a lot of opportunity at this time, no opportunity to open a business. If you look up and down the high street there are quite a lot of diverse shops, flower shops, ourselves, food and cafes.
“Any opportunity will be with a chain - Iceland, Tesco and Savers. They probably have got the best job opportunities, larger chains, have larger turn over for staff, rather than smaller when it’s more one to one.”
Vic, 35, owner of I-Fix, a phone repair store, which has been open for 4 years, said this data doesn’t surprise him. He said: “There are job opportunities, a lot of employees are looking for staff but it’s very hard to find people who want to work. People aren’t very keen. It’s generally a busy area.
“It doesn’t shock me, it’s the same everywhere. We are struggling for staff. I’d love to live in this area. It's a very nice area.”
Carlton was also at the top for places near train stations in Nottingham in the research, with Beeston Rylands following in the second best area. Shaun Patterson, 65, manager of Medusa Exotics says Carlton has had some new businesses open in the area.
He added: “No (I am not surprised), there’s been quite a few new places open in Carlton and Gedling. There are nice little shops and a nice little area. There’s a lot of different shops here.”
