In a move that caught the entire administrative and political machinery of the Capital by surprise, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal tendered his resignation here on Wednesday.
Government sources said Mr. Baijal cited personal reasons and his advanced age in his resignation letter. He also mentioned that he had contracted COVID-19 during the height of the pandemic.
The career bureaucrat, according to sources close to him, believed firmly in maintaining a low profile, away from media’s glare, non-confrontational administration and inter-departmental coordination. Mr. Baijal, in his mid-70s, was appointed to the post on December 31, 2016.
In addition to various significant posts in the Capital, Mr. Baijal also served as Union Home Secretary in the 2004 NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee over a 37-year career.
