Liel Abada names his Celtic Player of the Year as dressing room difference maker gets the vote

Impressed Liel Abada was blown away by the Celtic Park atmosphere when his side ravaged Rangers in February.

But he reckons Sunday will be another level if the Hoops can repeat the feat and all but seal the Premiership title.

Abada, who is up for the PFA Scotland young player of the year award, has enjoyed a spectacular debut season with 15 goals and another 11 assists.

The Israel star has played a key role and there have been several special moments along the way. His goal against Rangers was the best of the lot when he buried the killer third.

But Abada is sure there’s even more to come and if Celtic can overcome their rivals this weekend it could kick off a party. He said: “It was such an amazing atmosphere. It’s always fun to score against Rangers.

“It’s a great feeling to score against your biggest rivals. I was happy to give the supporters a big result. Was it the best atmosphere I’ve experienced? Of course. I’m only 20 and I played in some big games in Israel. But this was amazing. If we win on Sunday, could it be even better? Of course.

“The atmosphere is always amazing inside Celtic Park but if we win the championship I don’t even know what it will be like. We can talk about that afterwards so the focus is on Sunday and completing our goal.”

Adaba isn’t popping the champagne just yet. He knows Rangers are a formidable challenge and while Celts have a cushion at the top, they are not over the line just yet.

He added: “It’s been a really good season for us but we have a goal and we need to complete it.

“We want to play at a high level and we try to win everything. If we take the championship it will be a dream season for us.”

It’s already been a dream season for the lad who landed last summer on a £3.6million deal from Maccabi Petah Tikva.

Abada has flourished as part of Ange Postecoglou’s free-flowing side. He said: “I had high expectations from myself. I wanted to achieve the best I can and all my team-mates and coaches have helped me do that. It’s about working as hard as you can for the team and for the supporters.

“I’ll continue to work hard and give 100 per cent in every game and every training session for years to come.”

It’s not easy for a 19-year-old to relocate to a new country but Abada managed to settle quickly thanks to a little help from Nir Bitton. The long-serving Celt and his family took the new arrival under his wing.

Abada said: “Nir has become like a big brother to me. When I came he made sure I had everything I needed. On top of being a really good player he’s a top human being.

“Nir and his family have really helped me settle in Glasgow. I can’t explain how much he’s helped. He even cooks for me! I’m not sure about washing my clothes but he’s really done a lot.

“It was difficult coming here at first as a young player. But I’m a footballer who has a dream and I want to improve.

“Celtic are a very warm club with passionate supporters. I feel right at home now.

“We feel very united in the dressing room as well. There is a great atmosphere and we are all there for each other.”

It’s a team game but Abada is thrilled to be up for an individual award after being shortlisted for the PFA young player gong. It’s a measure of his success at Celtic but he reckons the entire Parkhead squad deserve to share in the glory – and he had a special mention for his skipper.

Abada said: “If I could give an award to every player in the squad I would do it because they all deserve it.

“But Callum McGregor has been the most important player in the squad. He has looked after everyone and kept us all together. He has been very good for us.”

Abada wants to drive Celts to the title and give something back to the fans.

He said: “It’s great fun to see all the love and appreciation you get from the supporters when I am in the city.

“Everyone is so good when you talk to them in the street. I just want to repay them.”
