Lidl reveals wish list of places where it wants to open stores - see if one is near you

Lidl has revealed a wish list of “priority locations” where it wants to open new stores.

The discount supermarket chain currently has 950 stores across England, Scotland and Wales and wants to increase this to 1,100 sites by the end of 2025.

In an update today, Lidl said it is looking for “prominent locations” with “strong pedestrian or traffic flow” measuring more than 1.5 acres for standalone shops and up to four acres for mixed-use sites.

Each location should be able to accommodate 18,000 and 26,500 sq ft and 100 dedicated car parking spaces.

Lidl said it is targeting town centre, or edge of centre locations, and retail parks in particular.

Its full wish list contains a whopping 1,168 locations, but keep in mind, this is just where Lidl wants to open stores - it hasn’t yet agreed to open shops in these areas.

Only a small number of locations will go on to welcome a new Lidl shop.

Lidl has opened 15 new stores in the last three months and expects to open 10 more later this year.

Ryan McDonnell, Lidl GB CEO, said: “The last few years have been challenging for everyone, but we’ve made it clear that we’re more committed than ever to ensuring that every single household has access to a Lidl store.

“That’s why our focus is firmly on the future as we continue to grow and invest in our infrastructure, while keeping a lookout for more sites and locations across the country.”

Lidl GB Chief Development Officer, Richard Taylor, added: “Our store expansion has been and continues to be unparalleled.

“In the last three months alone, we’ve opened 15 new stores – more than any other retailer, and in 2022 we welcomed customers through the doors of over 50 new stores.

“But we won’t be stopping there. Our vision is to have over 1,100 stores in the future, but really there’s no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential.”
