Lidl is recalling packs of luxury smoked trout over fears it could be contaminated with 'Listeria monocytogenes' causing flu-like symptoms. Customers should not eat the product, with a warning that it could pose particular risks to the elderly, pregnant women and babies.
The items affected are Deluxe Oak Smoked Scottish Louch Trout and Lighthouse Bay Smoked Trout Trimmings, produced by St James Smokehouse.
The warning for the Louch Trout applies to 100g packs with all use-by dates between and including December 20, 2022 and January 6, 2023. The Smoked Trout Trimmings warning is for all use-by dates between and including December 20, 2022 and January 6, 2023.
A recall notice issued by Lidl and shared through the Food Standards Agency said: "Lidl GB is recalling Deluxe Oak Smoked Scottish Louch Trout and Lighthouse Bay Smoked Trout Trimmings, produced by St James Smokehouse because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
"Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.
"Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems."
It added: "Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.
Anyone who has bought the products is being told not to eat them. Lidl said: "Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund. Any queries or concerns can be directed to Lidl Customer Services on 0800 977 7766 or customer.services@lidl.co.uk"
Lidl's notice added: "Lidl GB wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused."
