Lidl loses 'cheapest supermarket' spot and is pushed into third place after 20p price hike on essential

Budget supermarket Lidl has once again been bumped off the cheapest spot after a price hike. The top spot for our weekly comparison of basics has been alternating between Lidl and Aldi over recent weeks.

Since March we've been tracking the cost of the same eight items - a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince - and last week reported how the cost had topped £11 at every supermarket after Lidl increased the price of its teabags and beans.

Now this week the retailer has made another price hike, the only one of the seven supermarkets to make any change this week, by putting the cost of its pack of mince up by 20p, from £1.79 to £1.99.

That's despite every supermarket except for Asda selling it at the lower price.

The move means that it's also fallen into third place, behind Asda as well as Aldi, as the full Lidl shop now comes to £11.23, behind their respective £11.22 and £11.11.

Sainsbury's is the fourth cheapest at £11.41, followed by £11.50 at Tesco and £11.55 at Morrisons.

A spokesperson for Lidl said: "At Lidl, we are committed to keeping prices as low as possible for our customers. Through independent research carried out by The Grocer, results of their ‘Super Grocer 33’ basket comparison showed Lidl to be the cheapest for the past three consecutive reports, with the latest showing that a basket of Lidl products were 86p cheaper than the next cheapest supermarket, and £27.88 cheaper than the most expensive."
