Lidl issues urgent food recall due to Listeria concerns - serious health risk

Lidl has issued an urgent recall on a popular fish product, due to Listeria monocytogenes being found present.

The Eridanous Greek-Style Smoked Mackerel Fillet with Olives and Oregano - accompanied by Soy Oil - sold in the budget retailer's supermarkets across the UK has since been stripped from shelves, amid serious health concerns.

Listeria monocytogenes in food when consumed can cause symptoms similar to the flu, such as high temperatures, muscular aches and pains, chills, vomiting and diarrhoea. However, in more rare cases, the virus can lead to complications such as meningitis.

The Express reports that people who are more vulnerable to listeria infections are the elderly over 65, pregnant women, babies less than one month old and people who have weakened immune systems. Lidl has in-turn issued point of sale notices which are displayed in all supermarkets stocking the mackerel product.

The notices are in place to inform customers of the product recall, and tell them what to do if they have the product at home.

The Food Standards Agency has also shared advice, saying: "If you have bought the above product do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund."
