Lidl customers told to not eat smoked salmon as products pulled from shelves days before Christmas over contamination fears

Lidl has pulled a range of smoked salmon and trout from its shelves just days before Christmas over contamination fears. Several of the products were recalled because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The products included in the recall were the Lidl Deluxe Oak Smoked Scottish Louch/ Loch Trout at 100g and the Lidl Lighthouse Bay Smoked Trout Trimmings at 120g. The products pulled were those with use-by dates between and including December 20 and January 6.

Also recalled were the Lidl Deluxe Mild and Delicate Smoked Scottish Salmon at 100g and the Lidl Deluxe Smoked Scottish Salmon with Ben Bracken Whisky at 100g with the use-by date of January 11, as well as the Lidl Lighthouse Bay Smoked Scottish Salmon Trimmings at 120g, which would need to have been eaten by December 31.

In an update by the Food Standards Agency, it said: "Lidl GB is extending the recall of Smoked Trout to include Smoked Salmon products, produced by St James Smokehouse because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes." Read the full alert here.

Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

Point of sale notices are to be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products, explaining to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.

Anyone who is bought the products is told to not eat them and instead return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund. Any queries or concerns can be directed to Lidl Customer Services on 0800 977 7766 or customer.services@lidl.co.uk. Lidl apologised in its notice.
