Lidl beats Cornetto strawberry ice cream cones in blind taste test

With the temperature beginning to heat up, quite a few households will be looking to stock up their freezers with a few refreshing ice creams to keep cool.

And while it may be tempting to grab a box of those iconic creamy and crunchy Cornetto's, you might want to consider making the switch to a summer own-version. The fan-favourite ice cream cones that are owned by Wall's have been a hit with UK families throughout the summer for decades but a recent taste test has shown there may not be only one Cornetto after all.

A blind taste test from leading consumer champion Which? tested a range of supermarket bought strawberry ice cream cones against the iconic UK brand and found that one was leagues above the rest - Lidl.

The news will no doubt come as welcome news to households across the country who have been flocking to discounted supermarket's in a bid to keep costs low during the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Lidl's Bon Gelati Premium Ice Cream Strawberry and Vanilla Cones swept the competition (Lidl)

The taste test included 69 regular ice cream consumers who compared a range of frozen strawberry ice cream cones from nine leading supermarkets against one another. They were asked to rate the taste, texture, aroma and appearance of each one, and found that Lidl's was the best of the bunch.

Families looking to stick to a budget this year will also be happy to hear that Lidl's own ice cream cones are 55p cheaper than Wall's, meaning they can still get that taste of summer for less.

The iconic Wall's Cornetto's were the second lowest scorer (Which?)

Lidl's Bon Gelati Premium Ice Cream Strawberry and Vanilla Cones (£1.45) swept the competition and took the crown with a whopping 82% of the vote. The panel found the supermarket's ice cream cones to have the "perfect balance of sweetness and creaminess, plus a good amount of sauce".

By contrast, Wall's Cornetto Strawberry Ice Cream Cones (£2) only managed to score just 66% of the overall vote. A third of the tasters found the popular ice cream to be "too sweet" and "not creamy enough".

In fact, anyone looking to stock up their freezer with ice creams for less might be better off switching to supermarket own-brands, as Wall's was ranked as the second lowest scorer.

Both Morrisons Strawberry Cones (77%) and Asda's 4 Strawberry Cones (75%) managed to come in at second and third place respectively. They were then followed by Sainsbury's Strawberry and Vanilla Cones (73%), Tesco 4 Strawberry Vanilla Cones (71%), Aldi Gianni's Strawberry and Vanilla 4 pack, M&S 4 Strawberry Ice Cream Cones (68%), Wall's Cornetto Strawberry Ice Cream Cones (66%) and Iceland 6 Strawberry and Vanilla Cones (63%).
