West Lothian library to be renamed in teacher's memory

A local library is to be renamed in a tribute to a teacher and community activist.

West Lothian Council Executive has unanimously approved a request to rename Whitburn Library in memory of Ian Tennant, a former secretary of the Whitburn Community Council who sadly died last year.

Mr Tennant was also heavily involved in several community projects and initiatives in the town as well working as a teacher at Whitburn Academy.

The library space will be known as the ‘Ian Tennant Library’ with the installation of the new signage to coincide with the relocation of the library facility to the new Whitburn Partnership Centre.

The family of Mr Tennant was contacted to inform them of the request and the response received on the proposal was positive. A consultation was also carried out with library users, with positive feedback received.

The new partnership centre progresses apace, with exterior scaffolding now removed to allow final installation of glazing and interior fit out under way. It is expected that the new building, which incorporates the town’s former burgh chambers will be operational next year.

Leader of West Lothian Council, Lawrence Fitzpatrick, said: “Mr Tennant was a well-respected member of the local community.

"He provided a massive contribution to Whitburn firstly, through his own career in education as a teacher at Whitburn Academy through to his position as Secretary of the Community Council in addition to numerous other local volunteering roles.

“The renaming of the library in his memory is a fitting tribute to a man who devoted much of his life to seek the best for the town of Whitburn.”
