Liberal Immigration Groups Criticize Harris' Border Policies

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during criminal justice roundtable

Liberal immigration groups have voiced criticism over Vice President Harris' recent adoption of tougher border policies. Despite their opposition to Harris' new stance on border policy, these groups continue to support her campaign.

Kerri Talbot, executive director of the Immigration Hub, expressed her disapproval of Harris' current border policies, referring to them as essentially a 'Republican bill.' However, Talbot emphasized her ongoing support for Harris, stating her belief that the proposed bill may not ultimately come to fruition.

Other liberal immigration groups, including Oxfam America, have also raised concerns about Harris' immigration stances. Gina Cummings of Oxfam America argued against bringing Harris' proposed immigration policies to the Senate floor, asserting that they should not be passed under any current or future administration.

Senator Alex Padilla of California echoed criticisms of Harris' bill, highlighting that it contains policies that have previously failed to address border issues effectively. Despite these concerns, Padilla affirmed his support for Harris, citing her commitment to keeping families together and providing a pathway to citizenship for long-term residents.

While the southern border and the economy remain top priorities for voters, some express doubts about Harris' ability to address these issues effectively. Critics, including Republicans, have lambasted Harris for her role as 'border czar,' a position she assumed in 2021 to tackle illegal immigration by addressing root causes.

House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer has requested documents from the Biden administration regarding communications between Harris' office and border enforcement groups. Comer emphasized the need for transparency regarding Harris' role in the ongoing border crisis, citing concerns about illegal entry and crimes committed by undocumented individuals.

The debate over immigration policies and border security continues to be a contentious issue, with stakeholders expressing divergent views on the effectiveness of Harris' approach. As the Biden administration grapples with these challenges, the role of Vice President Harris in shaping immigration policies remains a subject of scrutiny and debate.
