LibDem councillor 'assaulted by SNP supporter', Alex Cole-Hamilton claims

LibDem councillor 'assaulted by SNP supporter', Alex Cole-Hamilton claims

A SCOTTISH Liberal Democrat councillor was “assaulted by an SNP supporter”, the leader of the party has claimed.

Alex Cole-Hamilton, the LibDem MSP for Edinburgh Western, claimed on social media that a senior colleague had been a victim of an assault.

Kevin Lang, the leader of the LibDem group on Edinburgh Council, wrote on Twitter that he had been “attacked”.

He said: “I’ve been doing politics a long time so I’m used to shouty, angry people but today is the first time I’ve ever been physically assaulted. I’ve obvs [obviously] reported to the police.

“No matter what divides us, this kind of intimidation and abuse of people you disagree with has no place in a free and democratic society.”

UPDATE:

At 6pm on Sunday evening, Police Scotland said a man had been arrested in connection with the alleged incident.

A spokesperson said: “We were made aware of an assault on a man in the Dundas Avenue area of South Queensferry which happened around 11.10am on Sunday, 7 August.

“A 65-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing."
