Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy has shared the heartbreaking details of their final conversation before his sudden death, calling the moment “chilling” and something she’ll never forget, reported PEOPLE.
The former One Direction star died in October 2024 after a tragic fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina, aged just 31. Kate, who had been dating Liam since 2022, had been with him in Argentina but flew back to the US just before the incident.
Speaking on the Jay Shetty podcast six months on, Kate opened up about their last moments together, recalling how emotional she felt when saying goodbye. “I remember sitting there with him and I was going on and on and on, and saying to Liam how much I love him,” she said, reported the Manchester Evening News.
“He laughed and interrupted me, and said, ‘Kate, you’re going to miss your flight, your car is in the driveway, you’re acting like this is the last time you’re ever going to see me again.’”
Kate said she laughed it off at the time, but looking back, she now finds those words haunting. “Just to even look back in time and really know that that was the last time I was ever going to see him again is just so chilling.”
Despite the pain, Kate said she’s grateful for how their goodbye played out. “In a way, I think that the way that we said goodbye to each other… I’m so blessed. It was that heartfelt. I wouldn’t have wanted it to be any different.”
Fighting back tears, she revealed how deeply the loss impacted her. “I was supposed to be trying on my wedding dress, I wasn’t supposed to be wearing a black dress,” she said, adding that Liam had even left a note saying he planned to propose.
Kate attended Liam’s private funeral in Buckinghamshire alongside his family and former bandmates, while in Argentina, criminal negligence charges against three of the five people involved in the case have since been dropped.
Meanwhile, Liam’s sister Ruth paid tribute on Instagram, marking six months since his passing. “Living without you is impossible, so for now, I exist,” she wrote. “Each morning I feel like I’m plunged underwater, gasping for air that never comes to relieve me.”
In a deeply emotional message, she added: “I miss you loudly, quietly, and in all the moments in between… Love you so much more than these words or my tears are capable of expressing, but I know you know this. For now, I’ll meet you in my dreams.”
