Four months after Liam Payne‘s death, the singer’s ex-girlfriend Maya Henry has spoken out about his unexpected passing and their relationship in an explosive interview.
American model Henry began dating Payne in August 2019. He proposed to her three months later in November. However, they broke up in May 2022. In May 2024, Henry wrote a fiction book called Looking Forward, which bore a lot of similarities to her love story with Payne. The novel, which followed a boy band singer and a model’s relationship, was laced with themes of abuse and drug use.

While people suspected there were some nuggets of truth buried in the book, it wasn’t until Henry released a video on TikTok on October 6, in which she alleged that Payne had been harassing her and her family, that Henry truly opened up about their relationship. In the video, Henry also alleged that Payne shared intimate images of her without her consent.
Now, in a statement shared with Rolling Stone, Henry painted a tumultuous picture of their two-and-a-half years together and the way drugs impacted their relationship.
“This was someone I loved very much. Initially, it was the drug use and addictions that tore us apart. Anyone who has been with an addict understands how difficult that is,” the 23-year-old model said in a written statement.
“While I loved him deeply, he did things that hurt me in ways I’ll never fully understand, and he continued to hurt me years after we broke up. On drugs, he became someone unrecognisable — so different from his sober self. I kept hoping each incident would be a wake-up call for him to get help, but it never was.”
Henry claimed that she tried to be there for the former One Direction star through his addiction and even put herself in “situations that were unsafe and harmful” to support him.
“I let myself believe that love could be stronger than addiction, that if I endured enough if I sacrificed enough, he would see how much I cared and finally choose a different path,” she wrote.
“But that’s not how addiction works. No matter how much I tried to save him, I was drowning in the process.”
In the statement, Henry said that she’s still struggling with her relationship with Payne.
“As I’ve uncovered the extent of his non-consensual image sharing — images he acquired during our engagement and shared without my knowledge or consent — I’m faced with the complexity of grieving for someone I cared so deeply about despite the pain they have caused me,” she wrote.

Maya’s statement to Rolling Stone came after the publication published claims by multiple insiders which alleged that Payne was struggling with his sexuality and texting fans with explicit messages. The source, who claimed to be close to Henry, also alleged that Payne manipulated Henry into having an abortion after giving her an ultimatum.
“Liam sent Maya a long message saying it’s either get an abortion and stay with him, or raise the kid alone and he will not acknowledge either of them,” the source said.
“This was a surprise to Maya, because Liam wanted to have a family, and they were trying for a kid.”
They claimed she terminated the pregnancy.
The insider also alleged that for Payne, it was “normal” to use cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, and pharmaceutical pills but things became more serious when “he got into smoking heroin”.

Liam Payne passed away on October 16, 2023, after falling off a hotel balcony in Palermo, Argentina. His cause of death was confirmed to be polytrauma — multiple injuries to internal organs — during a UK inquest into his passing.
He is survived by his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, and seven-year-old son Bear.
