Liam Payne’s Dad Gets Surprising Update Months After Singer’s Tragic Death

After months of heartache and legal drama following Liam Payne’s tragic death, his father, Geoff Payne, can finally breathe a little easier. According to People Magazine, the man at the centre of the storm—Argentinian businessman Roger Nores—has officially dropped his lawsuit against Geoff, bringing a small sense of closure to the grieving family.

Roger, who spent time with Liam during his final days in Buenos Aires, had launched a defamation suit against Geoff in January 2025. The legal action came after Roger was charged with manslaughter in December 2024 following Liam’s death. However, those charges were dropped in February, and now, he’s pulled the plug on his lawsuit too.

In legal docs obtained by People, Roger filed to dismiss the case “without prejudice,” meaning it could technically be brought up again—but for now, it’s off the table.

It all started when Geoff Payne made public comments about his son’s final days, which Roger claimed were untrue and damaging. In his lengthy 263-page complaint, Roger argued that Geoff’s statements were “false, contained material omissions, and many parts were not based on personal knowledge.” He insisted that he and Liam were simply “mutual friends” and that he “did not have a legal duty” to the singer.

But Liam’s estate wasn’t having it. They hit back firmly, stating that Geoff “denies, in strongest possible terms, that he has defamed or otherwise caused any harm” to Roger. Geoff’s defence was that Roger wasn’t just a casual friend but part of a “care group” meant to support Liam, especially in vulnerable moments. He said Roger was supposed to “keep Liam busy” and ensure he wasn’t left alone when he was struggling.

Roger wasn’t the only one under scrutiny after Liam’s untimely passing. Two other individuals—hotel manager Gilda Martin and receptionist Esteban Grassi—were also facing charges but had them dropped following a hearing in an Argentinian court in February.

Liam Payne’s death on October 16 was a shock to fans around the world. The cause was confirmed to be polytrauma—a condition caused by multiple traumatic injuries. The singer, known for his time in One Direction and his solo career, was just 31 years old. He was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Amersham, England, on November 20.

While the pain of losing Liam will always linger for his loved ones, Geoff Payne now has one less weight to carry as this chapter of the legal fallout closes.
