The official cause of death of One Direction singer Liam Payne has been confirmed as “polytrauma” in a UK inquest.
On October 16, 2024, the world was left shattered after it was confirmed that Liam Payne had died after falling from the balcony of his third-storey Casa Sur Hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Months after the 31-year-old’s death, Dr Roberto Victor Cohen confirmed that Payne had died of “polytrauma”, a term used to describe the multiple, traumatic injuries to a patient’s body and organs.
The confirmation comes after a hearing at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court — which took place on December 17 — where it was revealed that it could take “some time” to formally identify the singer’s cause of death, the BBC reported.
The inquest into Payne’s death was adjourned until November 6.
“Whilst there are ongoing investigations in Argentina into the circumstances of Liam’s death, over which I have no legal jurisdiction, it is anticipated that procuring the relevant information to address particularly how Liam came by his death may take some time through the formal channel of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office,” Senior Coroner Crispin Butler said during the hearing.
In October, a partial autopsy revealed the singer had a range of drugs in his system when he tragically fell.
One of the substances that was allegedly found was “pink cocaine”, a mixture of drugs like ketamine, MDMA, methamphetamine, cocaine, benzodiazepine and crack.
It is also believed that the singer was in a state of “semi or total unconsciousness” when the incident happened.
Five people have been charged in relation to the death of Payne, including two hotel managers, Gilda Martín and Esteban Grass, a close friend known as Rogelio ‘Roger’ Nores, a waiter named Braian Paiz and another hotel employee, Ezequiel Pereyra.
According to CBS News, Paiz — the waiter accused of supplying and consuming drugs with Payne before his death — was arrested by Argentine authorities on December, 30.
The 24-year-old has denied all allegations made against him
Payne was officially laid to rest in November 2024, with One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan attending the private funeral alongside the singer’s family in Amersham, England.
