Liam Payne finally explains weird 'Welsh' accent following Oscars interview

Liam Payne has finally addressed his weird medley of accents after an interview at this year's Oscars. The One Direction star was interviewed live on ITV's Good Morning Britain regarding the Chris Rock and Will Smith incident, however his comments left more people talking about his accent(s) than it did his words.

His accent was slammed on social media, with many commenting he sounded Welsh, Irish, American, and South African throughout the clip. Now, he has finally explained the reason why.

On an Instagram Live, he lightheartedly explained: "It was quite funny - I had asked Good Morning Britain, the presenter, I said 'Please don't ask me too much because I've had a lot to drink and I'm underly educated about the Oscars.' I said 'Please don't ask me too much, and the very first question the man asked me was 'What do you think about Will Smith?'"

Not wanting to upset anyone, Liam did his best to answer the question. "I actually read back on what I said and I stand by what I said, but I'm just sorry it came out in so many accents." Regarding the cause of his many accents, he explained: "I'll tell you the truth. I was living in a house with two German people, three people from Texas, one person from Liverpool and me." He added that when he's around other accents he tends to lean into them, "I'm a social chameleon," he joked.

"It sounded like one of those jokes people say when an Irishman and an Englishman walk into a pub and that's what came out. What can I say? It was funny wasn't it?" Laughing, he added, "Don't have many drinks and address the country." Get the latest news from WalesOnline straight to your inbox for free with our free newsletters.
