Liam Payne blames 'bizarre' Oscars accent incident on 'too many drinks'

Liam Payne left his fans baffled when he appeared on Good Morning Britain with an entirely new accent last month.

As they tuned into the ITV show, viewers were stunned to see a clip of former One Direction star Liam speaking to GMB at the Oscars sounding a mixture of American and European.

The Wolverhampton-born star was talking about the shocking moment when Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock for a joke he made about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

But it wasn’t Liam’s deep take on the incident that got fans talking, it was his strange delivery in a new accent.

And now after weeks of speculation, Liam has finally addressed his puzzling pronunciation - telling fans it was all down to his living arrangements at the time and a few too many drinks.

“I’ll tell you the truth, I was staying in a house with two German people, three people from Texas, one person from Liverpool and me,” he told his 24million followers on Instagram.

“It sounds like one of those joke that people say when an Irishman and an Englishman walk into a pub. That’s what came out. What can I say?

“It was funny wasn’t it,” he laughed.

“Don’t have many drinks and address the country.”

Back in March, GMB caught up with Liam outside the explosive awards ceremony to get his take on the night's events.

Liam, apparently a few drinks down and feeling a little worse for wear, told the camera: "Will Smith actually used to live behind my house. I've had the pleasure of knowing his son and daughter very well.”

"I believe that he felt whatever he did, he had the right to do. I also felt there were three losers in one fight. He didn't know, being Chris Rock, he didn't do what he had to do, being Will Smith, and she did nothing, being Jada."

Liam continued: "It's a very sad thing, but there was a powerful moment for me to sit and watch one of the world's best emoters ever we've seen speak from the heart and I would rather take the beauty out of the situation than take the pain.

"But I had to leave my chair, I'll be honest with you, it cut me really deep, and I don't get deep about these things but I'm a big movie fan.

"Out of a horrible moment, there was a little bit of beauty in what came on and I'm sure everyone is very apologetic about what happened, it shouldn't have happened," Liam added.
