Liam Livingstone will head home early from the Pakistan tour due to the knee injury he picked up while fielding on his debut.
In a sad and cruel twist of fate the Lancashire all rounder was just hours into his first Test match when he jarred his right knee in the field on the second day of the match. Livingstone was due to play a full role as a spinning all rounder, but he was unable to bowl with the injury and has spent the majority of the match with Keaton Jennings fielding in his place.
He did try to bowl during the team warm up on day three but after sending down a few balls confidently and declaring himself ready to go, the knee locked up once more and he has been in pain and discomfort ever since.
The 29-year-old did manage to bat in England's second innings, but was visibly hobbling with every run he tried to complete and was left seven not out when Ben Stokes declared. It was his last act on the tour.
The injury is believed to be cartilage related and is set to keep Livingstone out of action for a couple of months during the winter with surgery not thought to be necessary at this stage.
In a statement the ECB said: "England all-rounder Liam Livingstone has been ruled out of the rest of the Test series against Pakistan with a right knee injury.
"He will return to the UK on Tuesday and commence rehab with the ECB and Lancashire medical teams respectively."
England are not planning on calling up a replacement with a tour squad of 15 remaining in Pakistan following Rehan Ahmed's elevation to the full squad from Abu Dhabi.
With Ben Foakes set to be recalled in Multan for the second Test England already have cover for Livingstone and are confident they can cope for the remaining two matches.
