Liam Fox reveals Jack Ross Dundee United congratulations as new boss insists predecessor will 'bounce back'

New Dundee United boss Liam Fox has revealed Jack Ross was one of the first to reach out to him to congratulate him after landing the job.

Fox was Ross ' number two at Tanandice and took the reins on an interim basis after he was sacked just six games into the season. It had been a disastrous start, with the Arabs losing five league games on the spin conceding 17 goals in the process as well as shipping seven to AZ Alkmaar to bow out of Europe with a whimper.

Improved performances as stand-in boss saw Fox land the job on a permanent basis and after an encouraging display away to Rangers, he's now hoping to push on and make his mark. But he revealed there were no hard feelings from Ross after the announcement, telling Sky Sports : "First of all, Jack is a top guy and a good manager. He will bounce back, there's no doubt about it.

"I spoke to Jack regularly all the way through (the interview process), and he was actually one of the first people to congratulate me on the job. That speaks volumes about Jack."

Fox, whose only previous spell as boss in his own right saw him sacked after less than a year at Cowdenbeath in 2017, insists his intention has always been to make it as a manager. But he admits he took some persuading before jumping in at the deep end at United.

Asked if he always wanted the job following Ross' sacking, he said: "It was a long process. Management was always the route I wanted to go down but I was in no rush to do it.

"But sometimes when opportunities come along, you need to be big and brave and take them. We've got a big challenge, we're bottom of the table, so we've got a really big six to eight weeks coming up with loads of games. We need to start picking up points and picking up points quickly."
