Defiant Liam Fox insists he won’t allow defeat to Rangers to derail his bid to get Dundee United back on track.
The Tannadice boss has slowly started to get his team going again after their dreadful start to the season. But after an encouraging run that had seen them post three wins and a draw from their previous five games was halted by Michael Beale’s Ibrox outfit.
Fox, however, is adamant he will not allow that set-back to halt their new momentum. He said: “The job of me, my staff and the players is to take the defeat on the chin, learn from it and then get back to work. We’re really disappointed we lost the game. I thought we played well for spells in the first half and pushed Rangers — but goals change games and we were disappointed to lose one so soon after the restart. We lose the second so quickly after that, then it becomes very difficult for us.
“You have to give some credit to Rangers. They have some very good players and started well in the second half. You could feel the flow of the game really, really change after the goals. It became difficult. But there are positives to take from the first half. Our season won’t be defined by Sunday’s result. We have some big games to come and I feel like we’ve made progress.
“But we still have a long way to go and that (result) is probably just a wee reminder of how far we’ve got to go. We need to take our medicine - then get back to work because we’ve got a massive game next week against Hibs.”
United edged the first half in chances created with veteran hitman Steven Fletcher proving a handful for the Ibrox defence. But when the Terrors failed to capitalise, they were punished by second-half strikes from Fashion Sakala and Malik Tillman.
Fox added: “It was a bright first half but the game lasts for 90 minute. There were aspects of the first half I was really pleased with but, as I say, the games lasts for 90 minutes and we have lessons to learn from that. “We’ll do that and keep pushing.”
Fox’s predecessor Jack Ross made 10 signings over the summer and Fox admits more are needed this month. He said: “I’ve said from before the window that we are always looking and I’m always looking. There are areas we are looking to strengthen and we’ll see what happens. There is plenty of time left in the transfer window.”
