Liam Cooper misses out on Scotland squad after injury hit start to his Leeds United season

Leeds United captain Liam Cooper has not been named in Steve Clarke’s latest Scotland squad for the upcoming international matches. Scotland are set to face home and away matches against Ukraine either side of a Hampden Park clash with Republic of Ireland in Group B1 of the Nations League, however Cooper will not be involved.

Cooper has been a staple in Scotland’s success over recent years, helping them reach the group stages of the European Championships last summer. This was the first time they had qualified for a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup in France.

Clarke’s side also reached the semi-finals of the World Cup play-offs, but were beaten 3-1 by Ukraine in June to end their hopes of reaching Qatar later this year. And while Cooper will be disappointed to miss out on the latest squad, it will provide him with a couple more weeks to get back to full fitness.

He has struggled with injuries throughout the calendar year of 2022 and his only 45 minutes of football this season came in the 3-1 win over Barnsley last month. Cooper was fit enough to make the bench in Leeds’ last outing at Brentford, however with fixtures against both Nottingham Forest and Manchester United postponed due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, he will now have to wait until October for his next chance of competitive action.
