Liam Brady’s 25-year career with RTE sport will end after Ireland's huge Euro 2024 qualifying clash against Gibraltar on Monday night.
Sources have indicated that Brady will be leaving the national broadcaster, who he has worked with since 1998, following the game at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. A source said: “Liam’s contract is coming to an end. The Gibraltar game will be his last one for RTE.”
It brings an end to the golden era of Irish punditry where Brady’s status as an authoritative analyst was complemented by front man Bill O'Herlihy's journalism, Eamon Dunphy’s candour and John Giles’ punditry prowess.
At their peak, the RTE panel saw audience figures increase when the final whistle sounded as fans tuned in to hear what they had to say. O’Herlihy was the first to leave when he retired after the 2014 World Cup and he died a year later.
Giles' last appearance was at the Euro 2016 finals whereas Dunphy, who began his punditry career at the 1978 World Cup, finished up with the station in July 2018. Brady stayed on after his friends’ departures, remaining a forthright and exceptional pundit.
