Liam and Gemma 'like a desert' as Love Island serves up its first controversial couple

Love Island's two youngest contestants have been put together by the show's fans - but they are not exactly getting on like a house on fire.

The show's producers asked fans on social media to vote for the first pairings as the new season's entrants went into the Love Island villa - and the Great British Public put Liam, 22, and Gemma, 19, together for the first time.

But after one chat that was a little bit more than awkward, fans were reacting with the realisation that they may not have got this one right.

Updates: Boris Johnson survives no confidence vote

Newport's own Liam Llewellyn is among the youngest of the men in the villa at just 23, and Gemma - daughter of England football star Michael Owen - is just 19, and among the youngest contestants ever.

The girls arrived in the villa first, but when the men came - they weren't allowed to pick their favourite boys from the arriving males - instead presenter Laura Whitmore said that the partners had been chosen for them, by the public back in Jubilee-addled Britain.

“You thought you’d all be stepping forward for the boys you fancy the most. However, this is Love Island and you never know what to expect. For the first time ever, we asked the public to play cupid and pick the boy they thought you should couple up with," said Laura Whitmore.

But the first hook-up between Liam and Gemma wasn't exactly love at first sight. Fans on Twitter got the gifs and memes out to explain the initial relationship in pictoral form, with a plate of plain chicken and veg making an appearance, as well as a dying tree in an arid desert.

Ouch!

Totally Dani on Twitter said: "Gemma and Liam have no chemistry this is so awkward," while Starstorm1234 spoke for many: "Liam and Gemma don't like each other. Like... at all. We got this one wrong guys."

Meanwhile, Skyla was a bit more optimistic. "Liam and Gemma are dry as hell but when you rub two dry sticks together a fire happens I guess..."

The first show of the new series saw Amber and Dami put together, Indiyah paired with Ikenna, Paige with Luca and Tasha matched with Andrew, as well as the two youngest contestants.
